Chimera Is the bicoastal musical meeting of three of Canada’s most active and dedicated improvisers François Houle (clarinet: Basel/Vancouver), Norman Adams (cello: Halifax) and Tim Crofts (piano: Halifax). Together, Chimera spontaneously creates music in the moment, through listening, virtuosity and the harnessing of years of experience in performance and creation. Chimera’s aesthetic is born in free jazz and the contemporary new music of the American and European avant-garde, mixed with individual broad musical experience, creating a uniquely Canadian sound. It is this subtle, yet markedly authentic aesthetic that is at the crux of the Chimera project: the development of a body of work that brings forth the music that defines what we do and who we are, in Canada.
Founded in Halifax in 2018, Chimera is touring Canada and pushing beyond, to share their unique and very Canadian new music.

Clarinetist François Houle has established himself as one of today’s most inventive musicians, in all of the diverse musical spheres he embraces. Inspired by collaborations with the world’s top musical innovators, François has developed a unique improvisational language, virtuosic and rich with sonic embellishment and technical extensions. His extensive touring has led to solo appearances at major festivals across Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia. A prolific recording artist, he has released over twenty recordings as a leader, earning multiple Juno Award and West Coast Music Award nominations.
Norman Adams is the Artistic Director of suddenlyLISTEN Music, and is a cellist, organizer, teacher and creator. Norm is a former Principal Cellist of Symphony Nova Scotia has been guest Principal Cellist of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and has performed chamber, new and improvised music throughout Canada, the US, Europe and the UK, (most recently at La Biennale di Venezia 2018). Norman’s passion is creating, performing and presenting new, improvised and electronic music. Through this work he has had opportunities to collaborate with many leading artists and travel to some very interesting places! www.normanadams.ca

Tim Crofts is a true 21st Century pianist. He performs a wide variety of music in concerts, clubs and recordings with a wide variety of artists including suddenlyLISTEN, Symphony Nova Scotia, and with such creative music luminaries as Gerry Hemingway, Evan Parker and Dave Douglas. Tim is also an educator, teaching both through sL youth programs and as a faculty member at the Fountain School for the Performing Arts at Dalhousie University. Crofts is committed to teaching improvisational practices and philosophies in as wide a context as possible, creating dialogue around issues of diversity and socio economics.  Improvising is power.
